South Stradbroke Island: Your Wild, Wonderful Escape Just Off the Gold Coast

If you’re craving a getaway that’s close to home but feels a world away, South Stradbroke Island (or “South Straddie” if you’re a local) is calling your name. Just a short boat ride from the Gold Coast mainland, this hidden gem is the perfect blend of wild nature, peaceful seclusion, and good old-fashioned Aussie adventure.

Why You’ll Love It

South Straddie is one of those rare places where you can truly unplug. There are no cars, no crowds, and no high-rises—just 21 kilometres of pristine beaches and native bushland. Whether you’re a nature lover, a keen camper, or just someone who wants to escape the hustle, this island has something special for you.

Bushwalks & Wildlife Encounters

Lace up your walking shoes and hit the trails—South Stradbroke Island is crisscrossed with scenic bushwalks that wind through coastal dunes, paperbark forests, and melaleuca wetlands. Keep your eyes peeled for golden swamp wallabies (they’re only found here!), goannas, echidnas, and a rainbow of birdlife. If you’re lucky, you might even spot dolphins playing in the surf or whales cruising past during migration season.

Water-Based Adventures

If you’re more into water than walking, South Straddie has you covered. The island is a playground for aquatic adventurers:

  • Surfing: The eastern side of the island boasts uncrowded surf breaks with consistent waves—perfect for both seasoned surfers and those just learning to ride.
  • Kayaking: Paddle through calm estuaries on the western side. It’s a peaceful way to explore the island’s hidden corners and spot marine life.
  • Jet Skiing: For a bit more adrenaline, jet skiing around the island is a blast. You’ll get a unique view of the coastline and maybe even race a dolphin or two.
  • Fishing: Whether you’re casting from the beach, the rocks, or a boat, South Straddie is a fishing paradise. Expect to reel in bream, flathead, whiting, and more.

Campgrounds with Character

There are three awesome campgrounds on the island, each offering a unique vibe and front-row seats to nature’s best show—sunset over the Broadwater:

  • Tipplers Campground: A favourite for boaties and families, Tipplers has a licensed café, BBQs, and even a little shop. It’s the most accessible and social of the three—perfect if you like a few creature comforts with your camping. Fires are allowed in designated fire pits, so bring marshmallows!
  • North Currigee Campground: A bit more secluded, this one’s a hit with couples and solo travellers looking for quiet time. The campsites here are perfectly positioned on the waterfront for watching the sunset and enjoying a campfire.
  • South Currigee Campground: Located on the waterfront and surrounded by bush, this spot is ideal for those who want a peaceful, back-to-nature experience. It’s a great base for fishing, kayaking, or just chilling out. Families love the kids playground and the small kiosk for camping essentials. And yes, fires are allowed here too (in the designated spots).

How to Get There

You can reach South Stradbroke Island by water taxi, private boat, or ferry. The Tipplers Ferry offers daily transfers to the island via Jacobs Well and takes about 30 minutes. Call Tipplers directly or click here to book online.
