Why Winter is the Coolest Time to Camp on the Gold Coast

When most people think of the Gold Coast, they picture sun-soaked beaches and summer vibes. But winter? It’s one of the best-kept secrets for campers! With crisp mornings, clear skies, and fewer crowds, winter camping at our parks is a dream come true. Whether you're a seasoned camper or just starting out, here are some handy tips and must-do activities to make your winter escape unforgettable.

Top tips for winter camping on the Gold Coast

Layer like a local

Even though the Gold Coast winters are mild, nights can get chilly—especially if you're near the water. Pack layers: think thermals, hoodies, and a good windbreaker. Don’t forget warm socks and a beanie for those early morning beach walks!

Upgrade your sleeping setup

A quality sleeping bag rated for cooler temps is a must. Add a thermal liner and an insulated mat underneath for extra warmth. Bonus tip: fill a hot water bottle before bed—it’s a game changer. If you're in a tent, make sure it’s well-ventilated to reduce condensation, and consider using a tent carpet or foam tiles for extra insulation from the cold ground. For van campers, thermal window covers and a snug doona can make all the difference on brisk nights.

Embrace the early mornings

Gold Coast sunrises are spectacular in winter with vibrant skies and peaceful surroundings. Our parks are situated right on the water, so all you have to do is roll out of bed and you're in prime sunrise-watching location. So set your alarm, grab a coffee, and head to the beach. Trust us, it's worth it.

Cook up comfort

Winter is the perfect time to whip up hearty meals. Think rich stews, roasted marshmallows, and hot chocolate to keep you warm. All of our parks are equipped with camp kitchens so you can cook up a storm. If roasting marshmallows if more your style, stay at Jacobs Well Tourist Park where campfires are permitted.

Must-do Winter Activities

Whale Watching

From June to October, humpback whales migrate along the coast—and you’ve got front-row seats! Head to Burleigh Headland or Point Danger for a chance to spot these gentle giants breaching and tail-slapping. Or book a local whale-watching tour for an up-close experience.

Experience local events & markets

Winter weekends are buzzing with markets, food trucks, and epic events. Don’t miss Cooly Rocks On, a retro festival in Coolangatta celebrating all things vintage with classic cars, rock ’n’ roll, and pin-up parades. For the fitness-focused, the Gold Coast Marathon in early July is a scenic and iconic run along the coastline. If you’re into high-flying thrills, the Pacific Airshow brings jaw-dropping aerial displays to the skies over Surfers Paradise. Add in weekend markets at HOTA and the Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets, and you've got a winter calendar full of fun.

Explore our National Parks

Cooler weather means perfect hiking conditions. Start your adventure at Burleigh Head National Park, where the Oceanview Track winds through pandanus groves and rainforest, offering stunning views over the Pacific and a good chance of spotting whales offshore.

For something a little more immersive, head inland to Springbrook National Park. The Twin Falls Circuit is a local favourite—an easy-to-moderate loop that takes you behind waterfalls, through ancient forests, and across creeks. Don’t miss the Best of All Lookout (yes, that’s its real name!) for panoramic views stretching all the way to Byron Bay on a clear day.
